Murawin calls on you to be brave and make change
in National Reconciliation Week

31 May 2022

National Reconciliation Week (NRW) is a time for ALL Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia.

The dates for NRW are the same each year – 27 May to 3 June. These dates commemorate two significant milestones in Australia’s reconciliation journey – the 1967 Referendum and the High Court Mabo decision, respectively.

This year’s theme: Be Brave. Make Change.

The National Reconciliation Week 2022 theme, Be Brave, Make Change is a challenge to all Australians to Be Brave and embrace reconciliation, so we can Make Change for the benefit of all Australians, now and into the future.

This year, Murawin hosted a morning tea with our team to acknowledge NRW, yarn up and share stories over a cuppa. When asked about NRW and how Murawin can be brave to make change, the resounding notion amongst our team was that reconciliation must live in the hearts, minds, and actions of all Australians. Our team are enthusiastic about creating a nation strengthened by respectful relationships shared between the wider Australian community and First Nations peoples.

Murawin’s CEO, Carol Vale said ‘This year our team came together and offered some great suggestions about the ways we can ensure that Murawin is taking braver action to achieve reconciliation. The ideas were outstanding, and Murawin will be integrating these into our Reconciliation Action Plan and Murawin’s work with clients and communities moving forward.’

Murawin’s Reconciliation Action Plan

Aligning with our NRW discussions, Murawin is in the process of finalising our Innovate RAP. Our RAP outlines a series of actions for achieving Murawin’s vision for reconciliation, developing and strengthening relationships with First Nations peoples, engaging our staff and stakeholders in reconciliation, and piloting innovative strategies that empower Indigenous communities. Our team will be submitting our RAP to Reconciliation Australia later this year and will work towards fulfilling this plan over the next two years and beyond.

The Uluru Statement of the Heart

In keeping with NRW 2022, be brave, make change, Murawin also reaffirms our support for the rights and futures of Indigenous Australians by putting our hand up in support of the Uluru Statement of the Heart.

Carol shared, ‘Murawin has facilitated many discussions about the Makarrata process because we believe in the need for truth-telling and a coming together, so that we can work through issues that need to be resolved. It is our hope that Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians will work together towards a society that respects First Nations rights and cultural heritage.’

‘Murawin supports a First Nations Voice to Parliament protected by the Australian Constitution and the establishment of a Makarrata Commission. We encourage our peers to do the same,’ Carol said.

Carol now calls upon Murawin’s colleagues, networks, clients, and peers to be bold this National Reconciliation Week, and indeed throughout all of 2022.

‘Please be brave and make change happen in your workplace, in your homes and in our communities. Reconciliation is possible, but we ALL need to be bold to create real impact.’
